Your UAE Winter Road Trip Kit: 12 Things to Pack Before Hatta, Jebel Jais or Liwa

The cool season is finally here. Windows down, AC off, and every weekend feels like an invitation: sunrise at Jebel Jais, kayaking in Hatta, the giant dunes of Liwa, or simply a long drive along the coast.
But nothing ruins a road trip faster than a dead phone, a flat tyre in the middle of nowhere, or a car full of sand on the way home. The good news? A few smart accessories and a 10-minute check before you leave make all the difference.
Here's the kit we'd pack ourselves.
Before you go: the 10-minute car check
Do this the evening before, not at the petrol station on the way out.
- Tyres, including the spare. Check the pressure when the tyres are cold. The right numbers are on the sticker inside the driver's door.
- Coolant and washer fluid. Mountain roads work your engine hard, and dusty roads mean you'll use the washer more than you think.
- Lights and wipers. Winter mornings in the UAE often bring fog. Make sure every light works and the wipers clear the glass without streaks.
- Battery. Summer heat is tough on car batteries. If your car has been slow to start lately, get the battery tested before a long trip, not after.
The 12-item winter road trip kit
For the drive
- A solid phone holder. Navigation at eye level, hands on the wheel. Choose a vent clip for easy swapping between cars, or a dashboard mount if your vents are low.
- A fast car charger and a spare cable. Maps, music and photos drain a phone quickly. A spare cable means nobody fights over the charger.
- A dash cam. It quietly records the road while you drive, which is useful if anything ever happens, and it captures that perfect mountain sunrise too.
- A windscreen sun shade. Yes, even in winter. The midday sun still turns a parked car into an oven, especially when you stop for lunch.
For comfort
- Seat covers. Sandy shoes, wet swimwear after Hatta, kids with snacks: seat covers keep your seats looking new and come off for a quick wash.
- A long-lasting air freshener. Long drives, coffee cups and beach bags add up. A good vent clip freshener keeps the cabin smelling fresh for the whole trip.
- A boot organiser. Keeps water bottles, chargers and the first-aid kit in one place instead of rolling around the boot on every turn.
- Microfibre cloths. For dusty dashboards, misty mirrors on early mornings, and fingerprints on screens.
For safety
- A tyre inflator. A small 12V compressor plugs into your car and saves you when a tyre is low and the nearest petrol station is far away.
- A jump starter. No need to wait for a stranger with cables. Many also charge your phone in an emergency.
- A torch. Phone torches drain the battery you need for calls and maps. A proper torch is much better for changing a tyre at night.
- A first-aid kit and warning triangle. Small, cheap and easy to forget, until the day you really need them.
The best road trips are the ones where the only surprise is the view.
Heading into the sand?
If your plans include the desert, never go alone, and only drive off-road if you know how. Go with an experienced group, tell someone where you're going, and carry extra water. A tyre pressure gauge helps when your group lowers tyre pressure for the sand, and the tyre inflator above gets the pressure back up before you return to the road.
After the trip: give your car a little love
Sand and salt are hard on a car if they stay too long.
- Wash the outside soon, especially after the beach or the dunes, and don't forget under the wheel arches.
- Vacuum the mats and seats before the sand works its way into every corner.
- Wipe the dashboard and screens with a microfibre cloth and a gentle interior cleaner.
- Refresh the cabin with a new air freshener so it's ready for the next weekend.
